For those who don’t know the tool: DitherFactory is LACIMA Tools’ dithering effect for Adobe After Effects. It turns footage and compositions into reduced-colour, patterned images, with controls you can animate inside the comp. Your perfectly respectable pixels can now age professionally.
Twenty-seven ways to lose colours
Francesco Clemente’s tool puts 27 dithering algorithms into one effect: Floyd–Steinberg and related error-diffusion methods, including RGB variants, plus Bayer, halftone, lines, grids, dot screens and other patterns. Different methods produce different textures, so choosing “retro” still involves an artistic decision. Twenty-seven of them, before anyone asks for alternatives.
Colour modes include Mono, Grayscale, RGB, Adaptive and custom Shades, alongside palettes inspired by the Game Boy, CGA, ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64, plus Grayscale 4 and Sepia. Adaptive uses median-cut colour selection; Shades supplies your own shadow, midtone and highlight colours. The palette can therefore follow your design rather than the fondly remembered limitations of a machine you no longer own.
Make the pattern earn its keyframes
Line, Grid and Dot Screen expose animatable angle and frequency; Halftone and Traces have their own Angle controls. Dither Amount, Downscale, Noise, input black and white Levels, Gamma, Colors, Shades shadow/highlight colours, Hue and Saturation are also keyframeable. The controls remain ordinary After Effects parameters, so the look can develop with the composition instead of arriving as a baked image sequence with strong opinions about revisions.

Downscale sets up chunky cells, while Sharpen, Blur and Noise provide pre-filtering. Noise keeps its grain pattern stable between renders, including multi-frame rendering. Random-looking pixels are considerably easier to work with when they remember where they were. That repeatability is particularly relevant to animation dithering, where the texture is part of the moving design.
Stay in the comp, spare the image sequence
Apply Effect > Stylize > DitherFactory to footage, a comp or a solid, or put it on an adjustment layer to process the layers beneath. For anyone who followed our Dither Boy 6 coverage, the practical distinction is where the work happens: this is an After Effects effect, so your video dithering stays in the editable composition. The frame-export-and-reimport expedition can sit this one out.
Rendering is CPU-based, with support for 8-, 16- and 32-bpc projects, Smart Render and multi-frame rendering. There is no GPU-speed claim hiding behind the colourful preview. The developer lists testing on After Effects 2024, 2025 and 2026 under 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. A macOS build is planned without an announced date; buying the Windows version does not persuade it to run on a Mac.

Install it, then try ruining something
The installation guide specifies closing After Effects, unzipping the download and running Install DitherFactory.bat with administrator approval. Manual installation copies DitherFactory.aex into Adobe’s shared MediaCore plug-in folder. After restarting After Effects, use Options > Activate / Replace license in Effect Controls to enter the key. Device slots can be managed there or through Find my key.
The free trial contains the full effect, has no time limit and adds a red X over the frame. The download link is sent by email; no account is required. Entering a purchased key removes the X without reinstalling. Subtle watermarking has apparently been left to another department. Use the trial with your actual project bit depth, effect stack and delivery resolution before committing a production to its new, deliberately limited colour vocabulary.

The bill has fewer moving parts
The regular direct-store price is €39 including VAT; the developer’s itch.io listing quotes US$39. The licence is personal and perpetual, active on two computers at once, and includes every 1.x update. It verifies offline; an internet connection is not required to keep working, although online checks apply when connected. Output from your own artwork can be used commercially, and LACIMA offers a 14-day refund period. A focused little helper, then: more decisions about pixels, fewer about the subscription calendar.
