Teletrend’s MPEG-4 audio-video link carried one video signal and two audio signals in real time over a narrowband digital connection. The company positioned it for broadcast-quality contribution links. Its MPEG-4 compression based on H.264, combined with targeted filtering, was claimed to require between half and one quarter of the bandwidth of MPEG-2 systems at comparable quality.
The system allowed professional broadcasters to use widely available 2 Mbit/s transmission circuits. Straightforward installation and operation supported temporary deployments, while remote monitoring and high availability targeted permanent service.
The encoder included composite, component and S-Video inputs, plus balanced and unbalanced audio. SDI and AES/EBU digital inputs were optional. Encoded MPEG-4 streams left the system through 10/100 Mbit/s Ethernet for unicast or multicast distribution, allowing standard IT communications equipment. Interfaces for G.703/G.704 transmission were also available.
