“LD50,” starring former Spice Girl Melanie Brown, Tom Hardy and Katharine Towne, follows a group of animal-rights activists who run into trouble while trying to free a colleague from a secret laboratory. The film was the first project graded in MPC’s new digital film lab using a Quantel iQ system. The intended look was dark, threatening and desaturated to support the film’s mood. The iQ made it possible to import the offline edit and run it in real time beside the 2K scans in split-screen mode, ensuring that the offline cut matched the processed film. Key lighting effects included flashbacks, highlight blurs, grading vignettes and colour-negative effects. MPC also added around 70 effects. The most significant was an electromagnetic “light creature” that manifests through electricity and plays a central role in “LD50.” The creature was built in Maya and composited in Shake. MPC’s artists also used the Apple software to create the film’s title sequence. “LD50” is scheduled for release at the end of this year or the beginning of next year.
