Volkswagen opened an HD cinema at its Gläserne Manufaktur visitor centre in Dresden after viewing documentary material produced in HDCAM by OTOM HDTV- und Filmproduktion.
HDCAM acquisition and multiformat playback
OTOM recorded the first factory documentary with a Sony HDW-F900 HDCAM camera. The commissioned 26-minute Digital Betacam master was created through downconversion and editing, while an HD screening persuaded Volkswagen to commission a second HDCAM production and specify HD for the cinema.
A Sony HDW-M2100P recorder handled playback. In addition to HDCAM, it supported Digital Betacam, MPEG IMX, Betacam SX, Betacam SP and Betacam tapes. A Folsom Research Screen Pro 1604 presentation switcher provided access to as many as 20 video sources and controlled up to six screens.
HD finishing and surround mix
The second, 23-minute film on Phaeton production technology was shot by Sven Kiesche. Chroma TV in Hamburg completed offline and online editing with Avid DS HD, using uncompressed HD editing and finishing. TaurusMediaTechnik mixed the soundtrack in Dolby 5.1 in January 2003.
