SplutterFish released a free bitmap input/output plug-in that added OpenEXR support to 3ds Max and Autodesk VIZ.

High-dynamic-range image exchange

Industrial Light & Magic developed OpenEXR as an open-source high-dynamic-range image format and released its code in January 2003 to encourage broader interchange between computer-imaging applications.

Professional graphics software, hardware vendors and content developers had begun adopting the format. OpenEXR had already been used on productions including The Hulk, Gangs of New York and Men in Black II.

Current host support and colour-pipeline behaviour should be tested before production use.
