Siggraph: MoXi Simulates Asian Painting

A new technology enables painting in the style of Asian ink painting on the computer

The name says it all: MoXi translates as something like “ink play”, and that is exactly what it is. It is a new technology for “real-time ink simulation”, with the help of which Asian calligraphy and similar artistic effects or techniques can be simulated on the computer.

The image calculation takes into account that, as in reality, the ink runs on the paper and thus transports the colour particles on the paper. The ink used for this in the Asian region is sometimes very watery and therefore had to be simulated by a dynamic fluid system. In addition, the particles settle on the paper in a very particular way and form, for example, at the edge of the brushstroke virtually a small pigment edge.

All these effects are expressed with fairly simple formulas – at least in the opinion of Chiew-Lan Tai of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, who spoke about Moxi in a lecture.
