Nvidia is showing Sorbetto virtual lighting software at SIGGRAPH, an extension of the Gelato film renderer. It allows an already rendered scene to be relit with the help of the graphics card.
As graphics processors become more powerful and versatile, Nvidia is using the computing power of its Quadro range to relieve the computer’s CPU. Sorbetto is designed to modify already rendered scenes rapidly without rendering the image again. The final image is relit with antialiasing, motion blur, transparency, displacement and other effects intact.
Its functions include:
– Adding, removing or modifying lights.
– Reflections and refractions.
– Caching different lighting setups.
– Support for Mango, the Maya connection, and Amaretto, the 3ds Max connection.
A release date for Sorbetto has not yet been announced. The program is still in beta.
