Chaos Group has presented a new version of its popular V-Ray renderer for 3ds Max. The new features are being demonstrated to visitors at the SIGGRAPH booth as technology previews. They include a new “Sun and Sky” system designed to make scene lighting easier and more realistic.
A physical camera can simulate lens effects found in real optics. As its name suggests, V-Ray Dirt can add virtual grime to 3D models. Used appropriately, for example as a transition map in a Mix material, the 3ds Max shader becomes an ambient occlusion shader. The new “V-Ray Fast SSS” material accelerates subsurface scattering many times over.
V-Ray will also be available as a standalone version and as a plug-in for Maya.
