Sensable is presenting a new version of its ClayTools modelling software at SIGGRAPH. It works with Sensable’s digitizer, which allows users to feel 3D models directly. A stylus mounted on a robotic arm can be used to model and manipulate 3D surfaces as though working with a lump of modelling clay.
ClayTools 1.1 is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2005 with the following additional features:
- Masking the working area by painting a mask.
- “Emboss Area” for drawing raised or recessed areas using the program’s internal brushes or bitmaps.
- Export of normal maps, height maps, colour maps and occlusion maps for the model being edited.
- “Groove” for adding grooves and raised areas to the surface.
Also new is the Haptic Extender for Maya, which was previously available only for 3ds Max. It allows users to:
- Touch and feel objects directly in the viewport of the respective application.
- Align selected objects easily with other surfaces, a feature particularly useful for character animation. The force-feedback robotic arm lets users physically sense when one object meets another.
- Use the virtual stylus to paint on the object.
- Position and rotate objects directly with the Sensable stylus.
The plug-in can be controlled entirely through MEL.
Sensable also ran a SIGGRAPH promotion offering a 30 percent discount on the device and software, but only to visitors attending the company’s booth in person. The regular price is around US$2,800 and may vary by reseller.
