On October 4 of last year, Autodesk surprised the industry by announcing the purchase of Alias. Only three months later, the transaction worth 197 million US dollars has now been definitively completed. Alias’s products, technologies and services will be integrated into Autodesk’s “Manufacturing Solutions” and “Media & Entertainment” divisions as well as into the consulting departments.

For the near future, Autodesk stated its intention to continue the development and support of Alias products and services. The initial priority in further developing the freshly combined product range is ensuring interoperability and improving data management.

As part of Autodesk’s “Design-to-Manufacturing” solutions, users in manufacturing thus receive a workflow extension toward conceptual design. In the media and entertainment industry, numerous customers already use products from both Autodesk and Alias in parallel. In the future, they are intended to benefit from a streamlined workflow for digital-film, television and game projects.

Several members of the former Alias management team continue to work at Autodesk: Dave Wharry, previously Vice President of Global Sales at Alias, is now Vice President of Sales in Autodesk’s Media & Entertainment division. Michel Besner, previously Vice President of Business Development – Emerging Markets at Alias, now heads product management for the 3D product portfolio of Autodesk’s Media & Entertainment division. Alias’s former headquarters in Toronto, Canada, remains an important Autodesk development center.
