At NAB 2006, Boxx Technologies is showing its new Boxx Apexx 8 workstation for the first time, which is aimed particularly at the visual-effects sector and is intended to process 2K and 4K film. Even with very large files that occupy more than 128 GBytes of memory, Boxx still promises real-time processing. This is ensured by 16 processor cores in a device that, according to the manufacturer, is so quiet that it can still stand next to the desk. At its joint booth with dealer ProMax (SL 534), Boxx is demonstrating high-end video encoding on the Apexx 8. ProMax is additionally presenting various preconfigured Boxx systems for the video sector.
It was only at the beginning of the year that Boxx launched the Appex 4 model as a 64-bit high-performance workstation based on four AMD Opteron processors with dual-core technology and supporting up to 64 GBytes of RAM. Appex 4 costs from just under 30,000 US dollars; the price of the Apexx 8 version could not yet be learned. The new workstation also does not yet appear on the Boxx website.
As a special treat, Boxx is raffling three GoBOXX 1400 mobile workstations with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor among all visitors who swipe their trade-show card through a reader at the booth.
In addition, a number of other vendors are also showing their solutions on Boxx machines. At AMD (booth SL 555), for example, a 64-bit demo of Lightwave 3D can be seen on an Apexx 8. Digital Vision (booth SL 517) and Nucoda are demonstrating film-master software on the same device.
