A paper by Erum Arif Khan and others deals with changing not only the color of an object, but also its complete material properties. Khan presents a method for replacing one material with a completely different one, starting from an HDR image.
His method works with both still images and moving images.
The trick lies in exploiting weaknesses in the perception of the human eye, for example the partial inability to perceive certain changes or to reliably assess lighting.
The method does not include any 3D objects or techniques. All changes are based on 2D data and 2D modifications, taking into account the weaknesses of the human eye and human perceptual abilities.
