With the d2 Blu-ray drive, LaCie is shipping a professional external Blu-ray burning solution for Mac OS and Windows. The device can record, write and read 25 or 50 GByte of data on BD-R (recordable) and BD-RE (rewritable) media. The drive is also compatible with DVD±RW DL and CD±RW. Two Firewire/USB interfaces as well as the Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 burning programs for Windows and Toast 7 Titanium for Mac are included. The software enables BD image-to-disc recording, disc-to-disc copying and data transfer for data backup. All users can treat BD-RE like removable media with drag-and-drop functions, while Mac users can display burned BDs on the desktop.
A 50 GByte BD corresponds to ten times the capacity of a single-layer DVD. Professional users can thus choose a substantially higher bit rate to create master content and thereby considerably improve sound and image quality. Because BDs have a hard top layer and are made from a new material, they are more resistant to scratches and light. LaCie offers BDs with capacities of 25 and 50 GByte.
The LaCie d2 Blu-ray drives are now available online and can be purchased through LaCie’s specialist dealer network during the course of this month. The price is 1,139 euros. In addition to the burning software from Roxio, CinePlayer 3.4 for HD playback under Windows is included with the drives.
