The most important new features of Gelato 2.1 include faster ray tracing and Ambient Occlusion, better stereo rendering with a new asymmetric viewing pyramid (Off-Axis Projection) and parallel-projection modes along with an improved anaglyph display (red/blue) in the Image Viewer.

The Mango plug-in for Autodesk Maya includes support for “Shave and a Haircut 4” from Joe Alter and the 64-bit version of Maya (Linux only; Windows 64-bit available shortly), simple multi-pass rendering, Texture Bake Sets for Maya and volumetric effects from Spotlight Cones.

Frantic Films’ “Amaretto for Autodesk 3ds Max Plug-Ins” now also support 3ds Max and offer Sorbetto lighting functionality for the Autodesk software. The “Gelato Pro Sorbetto” lighting technology has been improved and provided with an interactive option for adjusting camera parameters such as image depth and stereo control as well as dynamic shadows.

Gelato 2.1 and Gelato Pro currently support Windows XP and Linux operating systems. The software runs on Nvidia GeForce 5200 graphics processors or higher and on all of the company’s Quadro FX solutions. Gelato Pro is certified only for Quadro FX-based graphics cards and is supported exclusively by them.

Gelato 2.1 is available as a free download. The professional version Gelato Pro 2.1 costs 1,500 US dollars and offers additional rendering features and greater scalability for professional production pipelines. Nvidia also grants volume discounts and discounts for educational institutions.
