Sonic Solutions has concluded an agreement with Microsoft on the distribution of the advanced VC-1 encoding technology, the Microsoft PEP encoder. PEP is already used by studios that prepare HD-DVD titles. The new version of the PEP encoder is to operate under the name Sonic CineVision PSE (Parallel Stream Encoder): according to Sonic, it is ideally suited for authoring companies with a large processing infrastructure and is intended to form the best possible VC-1 encoding platform, among other things because of new options for fine-tuning parameters and controlling preprocessing. Sonic is demonstrating CineVision PSE at the company’s own NAB booth SL4314.
CineVision PSE is a scalable, software-based encoding solution that can be used in a networked arrangement of computer systems working in parallel. Depending on the configuration, CineVision PSE can, for example, encode several simultaneous data streams at the highest possible VC-1 quality in nearly real time, Sonic advertises. Among other things, the application offers segment-based re-encoding, support for ISAN and Ad-ID metadata, and a graphical bit-stream player for checking the quality of an encoded file.
“CineVision PSE offers high-end capabilities for professional facilities that depend on the best possible quality and control in VC-1 encoding, and represents an important expansion of our CineVision product line”, explains Rolf Hartley, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Sonic’s Professional Products Group.
