Eligible for application are feature and documentary films in 35mm format or on digital material (Digi Beta, Beta SP, HD Cam as well as digitally on hard disk) with a minimum length of 60 minutes for the feature-length film, a length between approx. 30 and approx. 60 minutes for the medium-length film and feature films with a maximum length of 30 minutes for the short film.
For more than 25 years, the Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival has been a fixed and respected institution in the German festival landscape and offers an important platform for young male and female directors from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Every year, the state capital awards the Max Ophüls Prize, endowed with 18,000 ?, in memory of the director from Saarbrücken, which is additionally coupled with distribution support amounting to a further 18,000 ?. The competition for the BMW Group Film Promotion Prize (medium-length films) is endowed with 7,500 ?, the short-film prize with 5,000 ?.
In addition to the Max Ophüls Prize, further distinctions are awarded each year in Saarbrücken, such as the Film Prize of the Saarland Minister-President, prizes for the best young actor and the best young actress, the best documentary film and the Film Music Prize of Saarland Medien GmbH.
