The Swiss Alpine Museum used a Dimension BST 768 3D printer to produce scale terrain models for its Building Mountains exhibition in Bern.
For the Eiger model, the museum selected a terrain section and obtained digital map material from the Topographic Institute in Bern. Proform AG converted that material into 3D CAD data for the printer.
The networked system built models layer by layer in durable ABS plastic. The same workflow could also produce elevation profiles, industrial prototypes, architectural models and film-set components.
The printer manufactured scale models of the 3,970-metre Eiger and the 4,478-metre Matterhorn in a few hours. It operated throughout the exhibition alongside demonstrations of traditional relief construction.
