Texas Instruments reported that 5,260 cinema screens worldwide were using DLP Cinema technology, an increase of 140 percent over the previous year. The company expected the installed base to pass 5,500 screens by mid-November and reach 10,000 by the end of 2008.
TI said DLP Cinema accounted for more than 99 percent of the digital-cinema market at the time and was deployed in every continent except Antarctica. Major operators using the projection system included AMC, Carmike, Cinemark and Regal Cinemas.
The single-projector platform supported both 2D and 3D exhibition. TI expected 300 additional DLP Cinema projectors to receive 3D capability for Paramount’s Beowulf, bringing the number of equipped US auditoriums to roughly 1,000.
RealD and Dolby were among the companies developing 3D systems around DLP projection. The deployment figures and forecasts were supplied by Texas Instruments.
