The „Encounters at the Cinema“ event series was one of the first initiatives with which the German Film Academy went public and entered the substantive and aesthetic discourse six months after its founding in 2003. Since April 2004, it has invited its members, supporting members, friends and an interested audience to the „Encounters at the Cinema“ series in order to present and discuss the most important works of German filmmaking each year. In this way, the classic idea of the film club is revived. Members of the individual sections of the German Film Academy and other filmmakers place the films shown in the context of their own work and talk with colleagues and an interested cinema audience about their craft and their self-image.
The Encounters at the Cinema now also take place outside the cinema – and look even more strongly and intensively at cinema itself and German film in particular. For this purpose, film publicists Alfred Holighaus and Nicolaus Schröder have devised a varied programme of discussions and films for this year’s „Encounters at the Cinema“ under the title „The Week of the Latest German Film“. Between November 12 and 16, 2007, film enthusiasts have the opportunity, with two events each in Munich and Berlin, to get to know some of the protagonists of the latest German film and their work.
In prominently staffed panel discussions with Academy members such as producer and Academy President Günter Rohrbach, directors Marco Kreuzpaintner, Dominik Graf and Sherry Hormann or screenwriter Christoph Silber, the different aspects of the latest German film will be illuminated and discussed.
The latest German films tell their stories without frills, deal with the past, with migration and integration, with the world of work and again and again with the lives and loves not only of their own generation. Even genres long declared dead, such as the Heimatfilm or the melodrama, are experiencing sensational reinterpretations, and intelligent entertainment cinema „Made in Germany“ that is successful internationally is no longer a contradiction. The dramaturgy lacks any compulsion towards conflict resolution and a happy ending. Sometimes references to European or American independent cinema are unmistakable, but often entirely independent signatures dominate.
