Since the end of 2003, MDR has been using the modular Video Production Management System (VPMS) from S4M in its Leipzig broadcasting center. The system plays a central role in the public broadcaster’s content management. Among other things, it controls the recording process for video signals and manages all HiRes storage for high-resolution broadcast-ready video material. With VPMS, metadata can be captured and videos in lower (MPEG-1) resolution can be viewed and edited at conventional PC workstations.

VPMS PlayoutControl allows MDR employees to control control-room processes. On the one hand, this includes playing out programme contributions and accompanying broadcast elements such as trailers, and on the other, ingesting contributions from VTR onto video servers. In addition, contributions can be played out to video tapes for the archive. PlayoutControl is also used in pre-production („live on tape“).

The module guarantees a high level of investment security because it is manufacturer-independent and can be used on various servers. It can also be used without VPMS video content management. Cologne-based S4M offers PlayoutControl as a licensed product.
