Apple released Final Cut Express 4, a major update to its video-production software based on Final Cut Pro 6. Priced at €199 including VAT, it added support for AVCHD camcorders, mixed standard- and high-definition material on one timeline, iMovie ’08 project import and access to FxPlug effects and filters.
Open Format Timeline
The Open Format Timeline allowed editors to mix DV, HDV and AVCHD material in real time using editing tools derived from Final Cut Pro. Final Cut Express 4 supported 1080i and 720p HD, automatically handling scaling, cropping and frame-rate conversion. An improved setup assistant configured a new project from the first clip placed on the timeline.
Effects, audio and titles
Imported iMovie ’08 projects could be extended with multiple audio and video tracks, picture-in-picture effects and animated titles. More than 50 new FxPlug filters were included, among them Soft Focus, Vignette and Light Rays, with support for hundreds of additional filters and effects from third-party FxPlug developers.
Updated audio tools included Soft Normalize and Gain for raising clip levels without distortion. LiveType 2 was bundled for producing animated titles from a library of fonts, textures, templates and effects.
Pricing
Final Cut Express 4 was available for €199 including VAT. Registered users of earlier versions could upgrade for €99 including VAT.
