The sixth Berlinale Talent Campus received 3,304 applications from young filmmakers in 120 countries, including first-time submissions from Trinidad and Tobago and Vietnam. A total of 350 applicants will attend from 9 to 14 February 2008 under the title “Screening Emotions – Cinema’s Finest Asset”.
“Exploring emotion in cinema means looking into the heart of the film industry,” says Talent Campus Director Dorothee Wenner. “Every filmmaking discipline revolves around producing emotion. At the same time, emotion is the part of the business that can only be calculated to a very limited degree and has always been central to cinema’s fascination.”
Participants will work with Berlinale guests and international specialists from across filmmaking to examine the subject in theory and practice. The campus returns to the three Hebbel am Ufer venues HAU1, HAU2 and HAU3 in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
Production designer Alex McDowell is part of the programme. His work combines traditional set design with digital effects and includes “Fight Club”, “Minority Report”, “The Terminal” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. McDowell will discuss the process of building imaginary worlds.
The programme also examines short film as a field for cinematic experimentation and as an entry point for young filmmakers. In cooperation with Forum Expanded and Berlinale Shorts, the session “Short Films Expand Cinema” will review new presentation forms, exhibition spaces and short-film centres.
Filmmaker and video artist Matthias Müller and Shai Heredia, founder and curator of India’s Experimenta festival, will take part in the panel.
