The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has now announced its nominations for the 80th Academy Awards. The western thriller “No Country for Old Men” enters this year’s Oscar race as the favourite. Joel and Ethan Coen’s work received eight nominations when they were announced. Close behind are the British film “Atonement” with seven nominations and the oil-prospecting drama “There Will Be Blood” with six.

Among those hoping for the title of Best Actor are George Clooney (“Michael Clayton”), Daniel Day-Lewis (“There Will Be Blood”) and Johnny Depp (“Sweeney Todd”). In the women’s category, Cate Blanchett (“Elizabeth – The Golden Age”), Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”) and Julie Christie (“Away from Her”) are among those competing for the golden statuette.

As the organisers confirmed, the 80th Academy Awards will take place as planned in Hollywood on February 24 despite the writers’ strike, actors’ boycotts or other obstacles. On E! Entertainment, the lifestyle channel in the Kabel Digital Home programming package, viewers can watch the show of superlatives live during the night of February 24 to 25. From 0.00, E! reporters Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic will be on the red carpet to interview stars and starlets.

Oscar fans also get their money’s worth on KinoweltTV: from 18.35, the film-art channel in the Kabel Digital Home programming package will show six films that won a total of 25 Oscars. These include Bertolucci’s “The Last Emperor” (nine Academy Awards in 1988, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Cinematography) and director Anthony Minghella’s “The English Patient” (also honoured with nine “golden boys” in 1997).
