The Visual Effects Society nominated the companies for work on Surf’s Up, Spider-Man 3, Beowulf and The Golden Compass. Artists used MAXON’s CINEMA 4D and BodyPaint 3D to create characters, backgrounds and environments. The awards were scheduled for 10 February 2008 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
For The Golden Compass, Framestore CFC used BodyPaint 3D for texture maps on bears, armour, digital doubles and computer-generated environments. Lead texture-paint supervisor Daren Horley cited direct painting on 3D models, projection painting for removing seams, and cloning texture sections to other geometry.
For Spider-Man 3, Sony Pictures Imageworks used BodyPaint 3D for textures from sand to cityscapes, environments and sky retouching. Texture-paint lead Elbert Yen said the software handled multi-layer 8K textures for skyscrapers and subway shafts.
Imageworks also used CINEMA 4D and BodyPaint 3D on Surf’s Up for large environments, beach scenes, penguin feathers and the main characters’ home. A 12-person matte-painting team used CINEMA 4D on around 350 Beowulf scenes, including a sea-water sequence and 360-degree projection paintings.
