At the heart of the International Comic Salon Erlangen is the trade fair with around 150 international exhibitors. Publishers, agencies and comic dealers present their programmes and introduce numerous new releases to the public for the first time. More than 300 artists from around the world will once again create long queues at the signing tables.
A key feature of the International Comic Salon Erlangen is the large number of exhibitions throughout the city: one of the focal points in 2008 is devoted to China as a comics country. Chinese artists from different generations present their work in solo and group exhibitions. Wilhelm Busch is honoured on the 100th anniversary of his death in a comprehensive exhibition at the Erlangen City Museum, while the Erlangen Municipal Gallery presents a survey of work by comic artist and Max and Moritz Prize winner Hendrik Dorgathen. Further exhibitions feature, among others, birthday celebrant Hansrudi Wäscher (80th birthday), the Italian artist Gipi and the young generation of Italian storytellers influenced by him, as well as French star artists Christophe Blain and Guy Delisle. The International Comic Salon also continues its series of exhibitions by German artists, including Reinhard Kleist this year.
As part of the International Comic Salon, the City of Erlangen will also present the Max and Moritz Prize, Germany’s most important comics award, in 2008. The Max and Moritz Gala at Erlangen’s Markgrafentheater (Friday, May 23, 2008) is one of the Salon’s highlights.
This year, the International Comic Salon Erlangen will examine the subject of the ‘graphic novel’ and the increasing involvement of established literary publishers in this genre in depth. But programme offerings for the manga scene are also a permanent part of the 13th International Comic Salon. At the ‘Comic Film Fest’ in Erlangen’s cinemas, all forms of animated film can be seen alongside current comic adaptations — from classic reels and the latest anime to avant-garde animation and animated filmmaking by universities. Alongside lectures, discussions and conversations with artists, authors, journalists and publishers, the International Comic Salon’s supporting programme includes events on topics such as comics and computers or comics online, drawing competitions, workshops, cosplays and, above all on Family Sunday (Sunday, May 25, 2008), activities for children, young people and families.
