More than 350 international industry representatives attended the second Berlinale Keynotes at the Palmenhof on Potsdamer Platz. Organized by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the Berlin International Film Festival, the event focused on creative and strategic alliances among film, games and Web 2.0 under the theme “The Age of Collaboration.”
Medienboard managing director Petra Müller said production, distribution, reception and possibly film genres would change quickly as Web 2.0, collaborative economics and games developed. Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick said the festival provided room to discuss innovation from newer media industries alongside the traditional film business.
Consultant, author and New Paradigm founder Don Tapscott discussed the internet’s effect on film production, distribution and marketing. Filmmaker Matt Hanson presented A Swarm of Angels, an open film project built around a web community of more than 1,000 members. Blender Foundation chairman and Blender lead developer Ton Roosendaal demonstrated the open movie project Peach, whose content and production used free software and contributions from developers around the world.
Ubisoft producer Jade Raymond discussed the relationship between games and filmmaking, citing Assassin’s Creed and calling for both industries to exchange experience. Screenwriter and game developer Jordan Mechner described selling the film rights to Prince of Persia to Disney and working as a screenwriter on the adaptation.
The speakers described cross-industry exchange as an early-stage development with creative, economic and technological implications for the participating sectors.
