Planet Earth. With the development of his steam engine, patented in 1769, James Watt once set the Industrial Revolution in motion. Since then, one technical innovation has chased the next: while people still marvelled at automobiles around 1900, travelling by aeroplane or having a navigation system in the car are among the commonplace features of the new millennium.
But will humanity not ultimately have to pay dearly for these extremely pleasant achievements? Planet Earth and her atmosphere seem no longer able to cope with human intervention: global warming, floods, drought disasters, water shortages, dying animal species, homelessness and a huge global economic crisis could be the consequences, experts warn.
How do I see our planet today? What will our planets look like in the future? What makes our Earth worth living on? Where is the world still in order? And: what can we humans do to help our planet? The subject offers great scope for imaginative realisation in film. Whether a staged short film or 2D/3D animation, documentary or science-fiction scenario — every format is permitted at eDward 2008.
This is the opportunity for young filmmakers from all over the world: to tell their view of planet Earth in 30 seconds — the classic format of an advertising spot. The best films will be awarded prizes by an international jury and shown at the opening gala of the 11th eDIT Filmmaker’s Festival on September 28, 2008 in Frankfurt am Main. eDward — The Young Filmmaker’s Award is the international competition of the eDIT Filmmaker’s Festival and is a component of the festival’s promotion of young talent.
Conditions of participation: the call is aimed at international young filmmakers and young talents up to the age of 30. The closing date for entries is August 22, 2008. Alongside the coveted eDward trophy, cash prizes of up to 2,500 euros and further interesting non-cash prizes can be won.
