Over six days, 350 emerging filmmakers from around the world attended events across the three Hebbel am Ufer venues. More than 80 panel discussions, excursions, screenings and workshops involved 150 experts and addressed the theme “Screening Emotions – Cinema’s Finest Asset.” Guests included Stephen Daldry, Mike Leigh, Julie Delpy, Sandrine Bonnaire, Stephen Frears, Fernando Eimbcke and Shah Rukh Khan.
One Day – One Movie was part of the Campus hands-on program alongside the Script & Doc Station, Volkswagen Score Competition, Talent Project Market, Talent Press and Berlin Today Award. Four Garage Flicks produced during the week were presented publicly at HAU 1: On Time by David Bradley Halls, It Could Happen to You by Juliane Block, E.D.D.I. by Victoria Hayford and The String Puppet by Alexander Frank. The short films were made available at http://www.berlinale-talentcampus.de.
The final day featured the closing ceremony and Volkswagen Score Competition awards, hosted by campus director Dorothee Wenner and actor Thomas Heinze. Conrad Oleak won for his new score to an excerpt from Sophie Narr’s Platz im Schatten. Mentor Gustavo Santaolalla and jury members Klaus-Peter Beyer, Martin Steyer and Martin Todsharow praised his use of silence and musical identity. Dolby invited the winner on a one-week visit to Los Angeles sound studios.
The Campus also launched the Focus Africa initiative with Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, examining contemporary African filmmaking and bringing young African talents to Berlin. Zimbabwean participant Patience Tawengwa said she had formed international working relationships, including plans for a 2009 project in Zimbabwe with a Ugandan script consultant.
