Virtual Smarties world made in Frankfurt

Over the past five months, a virtual Smarties world has taken shape in the studios of ACHT FRANKFURT: together with agency J. Walter Thomson (JWT), the Frankfurt post-production company won the pitch for the new Smarties TV commercial. The film “Dragon”, produced for client Nestlé, is now being broadcast on German television.

The 20second spot combines imaginative images and technically elaborate post-production:

Its protagonists are a dragon, which, like (almost) everything in the Smarties world, consists of the colourful chocolate buttons, and a small boy. The boy was filmed in live action by Filmbar Hamburg and rides on the dragon’s back through the Smarties world.

“The idea of creating a virtual world entirely out of Smarties buttons fascinated us immediately,” explains Heiko Winkler, Producer at ACHT FRANKFURT. However, realising the highly complex and technically demanding commercial was a challenge, Winkler continues.

The joint project with Frankfurt agency JWT therefore began with the development of an overall concept that brought together directing, live-action filming and 3D animation. From the first sketches to the broadcast copy, project responsibility lay with ACHT. To ensure a perfect process through every production phase and the best possible result from technical, cinematic and dramatic perspectives, ACHT worked with two directors: Enno took charge of on-set direction (casting, pre-production meetings and filming), while Ralf Drechsler of ACHT handled 3D and post-production direction.

ACHT FRANKFURT was founded in 2003 in Frankfurt am Main. Since then,

the company has provided digital services for cinema, TV and commercial film productions.

To achieve ideal results in post-production, ACHT

FRANKFURT works closely with clients and becomes involved in the

planning phase of the respective projects. In addition to classic post-production,

ACHT therefore also provides shoot and project supervision and develops

design concepts as well. The company, which currently employs 40 permanent and freelance

staff, clearly focuses on technical innovations. Since summer 2006,

ACHT FRANKFURT has maintained its own colour grading suite for colour correction

in the HD standard.
