March TV Market: RTL Scores Across Genres

In March, RTL again leads among viewers aged 14 to 49. With a 15.8 percent audience share, it is ahead of ProSieben at 12.1 percent, Sat.1 at 10.9 percent, VOX at 7.4 percent and ZDF at 7.1 percent. Among the total audience, RTL places behind ZDF and ARD with an 11.7 percent share.

The channels of Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland (RTL, VOX, RTL II, Super RTL and n-tv) achieved a combined audience share of 33.2 percent among viewers aged 14 to 49 in March 2008, once again placing them clearly ahead of the ProSiebenSat.1 group at 29.3 percent.

RTL’s March highlights included the two Formula One races in Australia, with a 52.2 percent share, and Malaysia, with 49.6 percent, as well as the first two themed shows of “Deutschland sucht den Superstar”, which reached up to 29.7 percent among viewers aged 14 to 49. The quiz classic “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” attracted up to 7.86 million viewers, while new episodes of “The Ultimate Chart Show” reached up to 20.3 percent in the 14-to-49 group. The new two-part comedy show “Kaya Yanar Live! Made in Germany” entertained up to 3.91 million viewers and achieved up to 26.9 percent among 14- to 49-year-olds. The free-to-air premiere of “King Kong” reached a 21.9 percent share in that group on Easter Sunday.

RTL’s US series also appealed to audiences in March. “House” attracted up to 32.2 percent of viewers aged 14 to 49, while “CSI: Miami” achieved up to 28.5 percent. On 25 March, “Monk” reached new records with 4.13 million viewers overall and 2.93 million viewers in the younger target group. Its share in the younger group was a strong 28.7 percent.

RTL’s service-oriented reality formats remained in high demand. Up to 5.88 million viewers, representing as much as 21.1 percent of the 14-to-49 audience, picked up interior-design tips from Tine Wittler’s “Einsatz in vier Wänden – Spezial”. The documentary series “Raus aus den Schulden” with Peter Zwegat was watched by up to 4.22 million viewers and reached up to 21.4 percent among 14- to 49-year-olds. The documentary “Teenager außer Kontrolle – Letzter Ausweg Wilder Westen” attracted up to 19.8 percent of the same group. The special “Bauer sucht Frau – Das große Wiedersehen” achieved a strong 23.1 percent share among younger viewers on 24 March.

RTL’s information programmes also performed well. “Punkt 6” at 19.3 percent, “Punkt 9” at 18.0 percent, “Punkt 12” at 25.9 percent, “RTL Aktuell” at 19.4 percent and “RTL Nachtjournal” at 16.3 percent were all clearly ahead of competing formats among viewers aged 14 to 49.
