“So glücklich war ich noch nie” tells the story of con man Frank, played by Devid Striesow. Two years earlier, he was caught attempting to buy a leather coat for a customer in an expensive boutique and was imprisoned for fraud. Now released, he is drawn to his only remaining relative, his older brother Peter, played by Jörg Schüttauf. Peter lives with Marie, played by Floriane Daniel, and works as a graphic designer. An upright man, Peter decides to take in his younger brother and guide him onto the right path. At first, everything goes well: Frank has a job at a cleaning company and advances quickly through hard work. One day, he again meets the customer from the boutique. Her name is Tanja, played by Nadja Uhl, and she works in the red-light district. Despite limited funds, Frank visits her several times. He does not behave like her other clients: he remains dressed, gives her harmless compliments, presents himself as a successful businessman, and falls in love with her. When Tanja meets him outside the establishment, her boss Fritzie, played by Elisabeth Trissenaar, misinterprets Frank’s intentions. She sends thugs after him, but they mistake Peter for Frank. Frank decides to put everything right again in a way familiar to him.
