Bigpoint and Umbro Launch the “Umbro World Challenge”

For the European Football Championship, browser-game provider Bigpoint is partnering with international sportswear manufacturer Umbro.

The cooperation includes integrating Bigpoint’s Actionleague Soccer game into the Umbro World Challenge portal. Football and gaming fans from around the world can therefore play against one another.

In the “Umbro World Challenge,” football-loving gamers compete online for high scores in one of 2008’s largest internet gaming events. In the Actionleague Soccer game, the player takes to the pitch in 3D and uses keyboard controls to kick passes from player to player. Qualifying matches will take place at http://www.umbroworldchallenge.com through 23 May. The 16 top players will win a one-week dream trip to Dublin for the “Umbro World Challenge” finals.

The championship contest is held in several leagues. Players from more than 40 countries compete for a place in the final. Qualifying matches take place in the Amateur League, where every participant can qualify free of charge. Promotion to the Professional League requires an entry fee of €5. This is where the cup is contested. The top gamers from the eight best countries will compete in the final in Dublin on 7 June. Umbro will invite the finalists and a companion to spend one week at the four-star Clarion hotel. For the major football event, Umbro is giving away prizes worth more than €100,000.

“Thanks to the perfect high-end graphics and latest Java technology, we can offer players an authentic stadium atmosphere in the ‘Umbro World Challenge,’” said Heiko Hubertz, Managing Director of Bigpoint GmbH. “The entire game is completely styled by Umbro, enormously increasing the game’s authenticity. The real football experience familiar from coverage of actual matches is further enhanced by integrating in-game advertising in the form of pitch-side boards, and every player can actively take part in the action.”
