Revit Architecture and 3ds Max Design Accelerate Building Design

At the VisMasters Design, Modeling and Visualization Conference, Autodesk demonstrated how architects worldwide use Revit Architecture for Building Information Modeling and Autodesk 3ds Max Design for 3D visualization.

More than 300,000 architects, designers and engineers have adopted Building Information Modeling through the Revit platform. SHoP Architects and Archaus Architects are among the firms benefiting from a workflow based on Revit Architecture and 3ds Max Design.

The powerful combination of Revit Architecture and 3ds Max Design enables designers to exploit the benefits of Building Information Modeling effectively throughout their processes. Using the two products together also simplifies the addition of scene elements, provides advanced texturing and modeling tools for quickly calculating rendered views, and enables animated objects or special effects to be inserted so designers can develop projects in detail.

SHoP Architects

New York-based SHoP Architects first used Revit Architecture on the 290 Mulberry project in New York. Revit Architecture and 3ds Max were both used in designing the 13-story building and creating the associated marketing material.

During the early project stages, 3ds Max was used for pre-schematic views and concept development. Every aspect of the property, including design and construction documents, was created with Revit Architecture. At a later stage, SHoP used 3ds Max to produce photorealistic views for marketing the project. The Revit model is currently being used in construction coordination, and SHoP is present at the site every day to compare the virtual model with the real building.

David Fano, the firm’s Director of Technology Research, comments: “A large part of an architect’s work depends on deliverables. Using the combination of Revit Architecture and 3ds Max contributed considerably to faster deployment in every aspect of the project. Managing the drawing set with Revit Architecture was substantially easier because the software allowed us to concentrate on the building and spend less time thinking about important but routine problems. 3ds Max was also extremely helpful because its rendering functions allowed us to design elements of the building quickly and freely throughout the design process.”

Archaus Architects

New Zealand-based Archaus Architects has used Revit Architecture together with 3ds Max on more than 30 projects in every phase from preliminary design through construction documentation and currently uses the solutions on another 20 projects in development. These include the pioneering Zone One development, a new 82,000-square-meter mixed-use project in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital.

“Using Revit Architecture and 3ds Max allowed us to analyze and test various design options quickly and easily on this project,” says Erin Collins, Project Architect at Archaus Architects. “Grouped components and referenced linked files were used extensively for every model unit in Revit Architecture and 3ds Max. This allowed us to make design changes and model updates within minutes.”

Collins adds: “Shaded three-dimensional camera views and conventional two-dimensional drawing views were used alongside highly detailed photorealistic views created with 3ds Max to communicate our design ideas and project vision more effectively. When it was time to move from digital design drawings to high-resolution photorealistic marketing images, our client was absolutely fascinated by the quality of the material we presented and the short time in which Revit Architecture and 3ds Max enabled us to create it.”
