Comprehensive security strategies, system-security configuration, data protection, risk assessment and the monitoring of security events are the subjects of this reference work directly from Microsoft. Best-practice solutions are presented by the developers of the server platform. Recommended procedures show how the new security technologies can be used efficiently. Tips for defending against external and internal attacks round out the book.

Another section deals with implementing Identity and Access solutions (IDA) under Active Directory. It presents security-oriented Active Directory design based on RODC, AD DS, AD LDS and AD FS. It also covers Active Directory Certificate Services, innovations in PKI and securing certification authorities (CAs).

The book is written in a very readable style. Whether it is read from beginning to end or consulted for a solution to an immediate problem, the appropriate information can be found quite quickly. One recommendation, however, is to work through the book properly—adapted to the reader’s own needs—and preferably before using the system in production. There is a major difference between waiting for problems to arise and then trying to solve them, and avoiding the larger mistakes from the outset. The accompanying CD rounds out the book: alongside various tools, it contains the English-language edition as a full-text-searchable e-book.
