In summer 2008, Hamburg-based CinePostproduction subsidiary Atlantik Film converted its operations to a tapeless workflow to implement faster and more efficient processes. At the heart of the new workflow is a DVS SAN for online and nearline storage, together with a SpycerBox that integrates all existing and new systems through switches and high-speed data connections.
Atlantik Film’s objective was to increase project performance, efficiency and throughput while achieving the highest possible level of security. Its previous linear workflow was expanded with various workstations, with a particular focus on DVS systems: DVS SAN, CLIPSTER® and SpycerBox. As the central storage solution, the high-performance DVS SAN replaces the previous distributed storage islands and provides maximum data throughput in the tapeless workflow. Thanks to the DVS equipment, Atlantik Film now uses fast 4-Gbit Fibre Channel, InfiniBand and 10-Gbit Ethernet connections. The combination of DVS systems guarantees a seamless workflow without the copying and waiting times caused by tape transfers.
DVS SAN, DVS’s central storage system, was developed specifically for finishing uncompressed video and digital film. In Atlantik Film’s new workflow, it enables several workstations to connect simultaneously and access large volumes of data quickly in real time. DVS SAN was designed as an open system and can be controlled by various operating systems, including Linux, Windows, IRIX and MacOS. Spycer, DVS’s unique content manager, keeps the system fully optimized at all times.
Roland Nethe, supervisor of the Digital Lab at Atlantik Film, said: “We knew that converting to a tapeless workflow was the right path.
