Last Friday, 3D cinema was redefined at the Kulturbrauerei cinema in Berlin. Paramount Pictures Germany invited cinema operators, promotional partners and media representatives to a visual preview of the 2009 3D cinema highlight MONSTERS VS ALIENS in the presence of Jeffrey Katzenberg.
Jeffrey Katzenberg, chief executive and visionary of DreamWorks Animation Studios (DWA), presented the first excerpts from the eagerly anticipated MONSTERS VS ALIENS and impressed the audience with 3D technology developed by DWA itself, which Katzenberg said promises a completely new cinematic experience:
“The 3D films have a compelling quality unlike anything audiences have seen before. By giving our digital, three-dimensional animated films something of a live-action character, we now draw the audience fully into the story being told and in this way convey a new, highly emotional cinematic experience.”
DreamWorks Animation’s 3D initiative developed an elaborate authoring technology for its brand-new stereoscopic 3D films, the result of substantial investment in advanced system software for virtual worlds. These world-leading 3D authoring tools have only become possible through recent technical developments and enable previously unseen cinematic possibilities and entirely new visual dimensions.
Synopsis
Susan Murphy is a California girl like any other—until she is struck on her wedding day by a meteor full of space slime. Suddenly she shoots upward in size and becomes 15 meters tall. The military arrives immediately, captures her and takes her to a top-secret government facility. There she is branded a monster and given the name Ginormica. It quickly emerges that she is not alone, because the military has quietly confined other monsters at the facility for years. They include the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach; The Missing Link, a cross between an ape and a fish and an unrivaled macho; the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B.; and finally the more than 100-meter-tall larva Insectosaurus. But their days of captivity are numbered when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and cuts a path of destruction across the country.
The President sees only one way out: in desperation, he turns to General W.R. Monger, who is to lead the colorful group of monsters against the aliens and save the world from impending destruction…
