Sybase 365 began offering Microsoft Windows Live Messenger services for mobile devices, enabling Southeast Asian operators to provide mobile instant messaging.

The initiative extended a five-year Sybase 365 and Microsoft relationship that also covered Windows Live Hotmail Mobile.

“Microsoft Windows Live Messenger Services further expand our partnership with Microsoft,” said Sybase 365 Senior Vice President of International Operations Howard Stevens. He said the company aimed to create value and revenue for mobile operators and independent software vendors.

Growing consumer demand beyond text messaging was increasing attention on multimedia messaging and mobile instant messaging. Windows Live already had more than 550 million users, and wider mobile availability was expected to expand that community.

StarHub in Singapore and DiGi Telecommunications in Malaysia offered the service as Sybase 365 customers. DiGi had launched Malaysia’s first integrated mobile IM client, providing access to Windows Live Messenger and other services.

The service initially launched in Southeast Asia, with expansion to additional countries planned during 2009.
