According to DVS, the decisive factor in choosing SpycerBox was finding the most versatile possible system that enabled high performance and interacted perfectly with the AVID infrastructure at VFX.
At VFX, SpycerBox serves as reliable, high-performance storage for both online and offline editing systems. Two AVID DS systems and an AVID Symphony are connected online to the SpycerBox SAN via Fibre Channel, while AVID Media Composer is connected offline to the storage solution via Gigabit Ethernet. Because SpycerBox processes data up to 2K, DVS says VFX has image data available at optimal quality.
Communication between SpycerBox and the offline AVID workstations is based on a special file-sharing technique, DVS explains. A virtual AVID volume on SpycerBox is connected to multiple AVID editing stations via a TCP/IP network. This enables parallel access to the same content without clients overwriting each other’s project databases.
The storage solution also allows high-resolution projects to be transferred quickly and reliably. Film data that does not need to be available as online material can be moved to SpycerBox.
According to DVS, SpycerBox can therefore be used from every workstation not only as a SAN system, but also as NAS (Network Attached Storage). VFX benefits from high-performance storage in a 5U enclosure that gives different workstations direct access. Fast data transfer between individual workstations and the storage solution saves editors and colourists a great deal of time. As an arbitrarily expandable storage system, SpycerBox proves ideal for the requirements at VFX.
