According to its own information, Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) has commissioned one of the largest installations of S4M’s Video Production Management System (VPMS) with the implementation of the “VPN” project (Networked Production NDR).
VPMS is S4M’s solution for professional creation, management, editing and distribution of digital video material. It has so far been used by private and public television broadcasters in Germany and Europe. The complete “VPN” system implemented at NDR is an integrated solution with different components. In this context, VPMS is a key module that integrates seamlessly with other systems and connects them into a unified system. Annova Systems’ Open Media newsroom system and several Final Cut Pro editing stations, for example, were integrated into the networked production system.
In this way, editors can access and edit video material directly at their PC workstations, and finally send edit decision lists generated with VPMS to Final Cut Pro stations for finishing in the simplest way.
“VPN” enables NDR to use a completely file-based production. From ingest through sound work to playout of complete reports, video tapes can be dispensed with entirely.
After all control rooms in Hamburg have so far been connected to VPMS and current programmes such as “DAS!” and “Mein Nachmittag” are created without tape, all editorial departments are now expected to gain access to the system gradually. The aim is to produce the programmes made in Hamburg entirely without tapes using VPMS.
