Anyone guessing that an actor leads the field is wrong. It is a director: 24% of respondents voted Roland Emmerich the greatest German star in Hollywood. Following successes such as “Independence Day” and “The Day after Tomorrow”, his latest work “2012” is now in cinemas.

Second place is also a small surprise, with film composer Hans Zimmer receiving 17% of the vote. Without his melodies, cinema hits such as “The Dark Knight”, “Gladiator” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” would be only half as beautiful.

Third place “finally” goes to an actor who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in “Shine” and recently appeared in the blockbuster “Angels & Demons”: Armin Mueller-Stahl. Thirteen per cent of LOVEFiLM customers voted for the charismatic actor.

Fourth place offers further proof that German filmmakers are successful in every field. Cinematographer Michael Ballhaus has worked with Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Redford and Martin Scorsese and takes fourth place with 9% of the vote.
