NVIDIA Makes Unreal Engine Game Engine 3D-Capable

Unreal Engine 3, Epic Games’ most successful game engine worldwide, will be supported by NVIDIA’s 3D Vision technology in future. All licensed versions of the middleware can therefore be used to develop PC games in genuine stereoscopic 3D.

Some of the most successful games are based on Unreal Engine 3. They include Gears of War and Gears of War 2, Shadow Complex, BioShock 2, Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, Borderlands and Batman: Arkham Asylum. 3D Vision support also applies to Epic Games’ widely used Unreal Development Kit (UDK), a free version of Unreal Engine 3. The 3D development platform is therefore available to more than 200,000 users in total.

3D Vision is the world’s leading consumer 3D solution, supporting PC gaming, photography, video, Blu-ray 3D and 3D web browsing. 3D Vision consists of wireless active-shutter glasses and a USB emitter and can be used with compatible 120 Hz LCDs, 3D televisions and projectors. An NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX GPU or higher is also required.

“3D Vision support brings clear advantages to every Unreal Engine 3 licensee, UDK user and player,” emphasises Tony Tamasi, Vice President Content and Technology at NVIDIA. “It is now easier than ever to add stereoscopic 3D effects to games based on Unreal Engine 3.”

“Combining Unreal Engine 3 and 3D Vision makes games even more breathtaking,” emphasises Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic Games. “If you have not seen Unreal Engine 3 in 3D yourself, you would not believe how realistic it is. We are pleased that we can now make this technology available to our users free of charge, and we look forward to seeing the new games created with it.”

The update versions for Unreal Engine 3 and UDK will be available shortly. All games developed using this game engine will therefore receive 3D Vision support.
