Start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises are funded under the conditions of an information sheet on cinema digitisation developed by nordmedia Fonds GmbH in cooperation with the Lower Saxony State Chancellery. The funds come in part from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and from the State of Lower Saxony’s economic-development fund, and are awarded by nordmedia upon application in accordance with nordmedia’s guidelines.
The primary beneficiaries will be repertory cinemas and art-house cinemas, as well as smaller cinemas in rural regions that provide basic cultural services. Repertory and art-house cinemas, as well as cinemas with up to six screens per operating location in Lower Saxony, are therefore eligible to apply. In towns with up to 50,000 inhabitants, cinemas with more than six screens can also receive funding. Cinema operators from Lower Saxony can apply for a grant of up to 18,000 euros for their operating locations.
“Whether or not they are cinema locations is absolutely decisive for the quality of life in smaller towns and the surrounding region,” explains Minister-President Christian Wulff regarding the use of European and state funds. “A cinema’s competitiveness often depends on whether films such as ‘Avatar’ and ‘Ice Age 3’ can be shown in 3D. Lower Saxony is therefore one of the first federal states to support cinema digitisation and thereby help preserve the diverse cinema landscape.”
In an initial decision round, the following cinemas will receive start-up financing to convert cinema operating locations to the first generation of digital cinema technology:
