The Unreal Development Kit (UDK), the free version of Unreal Engine 3, was made public this week and offers the multiple-award-winning development set for games and visualisations free of charge.
Anyone who now wants to populate worlds created in Unreal Engine has 4,000 free motion-data files at MoCapDAta.com. The Japanese site requires only registration, after which the data sets can be used under a Creative Commons licence. They were recorded with a Vicon-MX40 12-camera setup; FBX, BVH and C3D files for a variety of characters are available for download.
If you now let these characters run through a sun-drenched, warm landscape (created with Unreal Engine 3), at least a small part of you has escaped the Central European winter.
