ARRI’s developers in Munich are receiving a technical award for their Zeiss Master Prime Lenses film-camera lenses, which are intended to make it possible to achieve greater light sensitivity while maintaining the same optical quality; performance during extreme focus shifts is also said to have been improved. The highest prize, an "Academy Award of Merit" in the form of an Oscar statuette, is being awarded this year to Franz Kraus, Johannes Steurer and Wolfgang Riedel, also from ARRI, and to the Freiburg Fraunhofer Institute for the design and development of the Arrilaser film recorder.

Eight other technologies were honored with an Oscar, including the Phantom high-speed camera family. The jury’s justification for this decision was that the speed and efficiency of the Phantom cameras ensured seamless integration into conventional film productions.
