We have already reported on Mari 1.5 in the past; the new features are intended to improve the 3D paint tool once again.
This video provides a brief overview of the most important features in Mari 1.6:
What’s new in MARI 1.6 from Hieronymus Foundry on Vimeo
Support for AMD Graphics Cards
According to The Foundry, the most important new feature is support for AMD graphics cards. The Radeon HD 7850, HD 7950 and FirePro W7000, W8000 and W9000 graphics cards have already been tested by the company and added to the list of graphics cards that have already been checked.
Flowmap Tools
The new vector toolkit could also be interesting; it is intended to make it possible to create effects based on a specification directly in the geometry. The Vector Paint and Vector Inspector tools are intended to give artists the ability to specify the direction of the paint flow while simultaneously tracking all changes with the Inspector. New brush cursor options for the Paint Tool are now intended to enable a changed display showing which brush is currently being used.
According to The Foundry, the newly added features also include Projection Cube and Projection Sphere Shader Modules, which allow a cube map or spherical texture file to be projected onto geometry, which is intended to make the workflow considerably easier.
Mari 1.6 is supported by Windows 64-bit and Linux 64-bit. The node-locked version is available for 1,210 British pounds, and a 15-day trial version can also be found on The Foundry’s website: http://www.thefoundry.co.uk
