At the gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel, the Technical Achievment Awards, the Scientific and Engineering Awards, the Academy Award of Merit, the Gordon E. Sawyer Award and the John A. Bonner Medal Of Commendation will be presented.

Among others, ILM, Weta Digital and Rhythm & Hues can look forward to an award: The Plum system, which simulates and renders fire, smoke and explosions and was created by Olivier Maury, Ian Sachs and Dan Piponi for ILM, receives a Technical Achievement Award in the form of an Academy certificate. A second certificate goes to Florian Kainz, Jeffery Yost, Philip Hubbard and Jim Hourihan for the architecture and development of the Zeno Application Framework, which was crucial to the ILM toolset.

The technology of the toolset at Rhythm & Hues, the Voodoo Application Framework, is now also Oscar-winning. Peter Huang and Chris Perry built the architecture, and Hans Rijpkema and Joe Mancewicz developed the core technology. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also considered the Lighting System at Weta Digital worthy of an award; it allows artists to see changes in the lighting setup with complex geometries very quickly. Martin Hill, Jon Allitt and Nick McKenzie are responsible for this technology.

Two certificates go to developments in deep compositing: Dr. Peter Hillman is honored for his deep-compositing toolset as well as the promotion of this technique for the workflow. Colin Doncaster, Johannes Saam, Areito Echevarria, Janne Kontkanen and Chris Cooper can likewise take home an award on February 15 for the development, prototyping and promotion of deep-compositing technology and the workflow.
