Maxon Cineware 2.0 and Cinema 4D Lite Release 16 (R16) are supplied with the autumn release of Adobe After Effects CC (2014.1). According to Maxon, these upgrades further expand the Cineware workflow and continue the strategic collaboration between the two companies. Here is an overview of the functions:

Cineware enhancements
Cinema 4D Release 16 compatibility: Maxon recently introduced Cinema 4D R16, which was optimised in the areas of modelling, creating reflective materials and rendering. Cineware 2.0 is compatible with the commercial versions of Cinema 4D and enables use of the functions implemented in R16. Many of these innovations, including the new multilayer reflections, are integrated into Cinema 4D Lite, which is supplied as part of the autumn release of After Effects CC.

Purge memory: to increase speed and interactivity, an internal cache is created to store render data if Cinema 4D R16 is used as the render engine. The “Purge memory” function removes stored data from the cache to free up memory for After Effects.

Default Layer: the Cinema 4D Layer dialogue box now contains a Default Layer option. Objects in a .c4d project file that are not assigned to a specific layer can be isolated in After Effects by selecting the Default Layer.

Automatic synchronisation: if several instances of a Cinema 4D scene are integrated into a composition, the new “Synchronise Layers” control can automatically keep the Cineware effect settings synchronised for all instances. If this control is not activated for a particular layer, the settings are not synchronised. This function replaces the “Apply to All” command from earlier Cineware versions.

Cinema 4D Content Browser: textures from the new Cinema 4D R16 Content Browser are rendered correctly in After Effects when a full version of Cinema 4D is used for image calculation.

Region of Interest: when the “Region of Interest” function is used in After Effects to restrict the preview to a particular image area, Cineware now also restricts the image area to the selected region. The render settings must be set to Standard (Final) for this.

Collect Files for Cinema 4D assets: the “Collect Files” command in After Effects now also takes account of components of Cinema 4D scenes such as textures, etc.

Cineware provides a seamless connection between Cinema 4D and After Effects CC. Users have the option of exchanging Cinema 4D project data with After Effects CC via the “Live 3D Pipeline” introduced last year. Even compositing passes can be selected, edited and processed further directly in After Effects. Cinema 4D Lite, a version of Cinema 4D with a limited range of functions, is part of the solution and is installed automatically with After Effects CC.

Robert Hranitzky tested the new Cineware workflow for DP this year. You can download the article at the end of the news item.
