Beyond that, however, it also has its own features, new tools and an individual interface style. Inkscape primarily works with the .svg vector graphics format, but can also process other file types such as .pdf.

New Engine

In this release, the new internal graphics rendering engine called Cairo has been integrated. It is intended to deliver a significant performance increase and improve the accuracy of the drawings. Google financially supported a large part of the work on the Cairo engine.

New Features

The "Trace Pixel Art" feature can be used to create vectors from bitmaps, sprites and icons, and the new symbol library offers a selection of reusable elements. New snapping options make it easier to move elements into the desired position. The other tools have also been substantially revised.

New File Formats

Support for new formats has been added: among others .fxg, .sif, HTML5 export and .vsd and .cdr import. .emf/.wmf files can now be read by Inkscape and written for all platforms. Support for .xcf, .pdf, .esp and .ps plus LaTeX has also been improved.

Extensions

More than twelve extensions have been added to the open-source tool in this release: a grid generator, a bitmap cropper, a text extractor and text merger, an HSL adjuster, a font replacer and much more.
