The crowd simulation plug-in Golaem for Maya, alongside Miarmy by Basefount, is one of the best-known crowd simulation tools and is used for many productions. These include scenes from Game of Thrones Season 5, Independence Day and many other shows. Anyone still new to the world of crowd simulation can already look forward to the “Crowd” focus in DP issue 06 : 17. The sixth version of Golaem was recently released with many new features, which we summarize here.
New Golaem 6 Features
- Character perception now lets you make custom settings to define the behavior of individual charcters toward one another.
- Through Channel Operators , you can use character behavior with more than 100 building blocks (e.g. for position, speed, distance to target …) to precisely control speed, orientation or your animation.
- Animation transitions can now be precisely adjusted in the Transition Editor, with definition of the start point and length of the transition.
- A new Character Emitter allows the creation of charcters (or other assets) via the Golaem Placement Tool or in relation to other charcters
- With the new Traffic Tool, you can create road networks from Maya curves; Golaem then automatically generates lanes and traffic lights.
Download & Price
The tool starts at €130 per month with the Layout variant. For anyone who wants to learn Golaem, however, there is also a free Personal Learning Edition (PLE), which you can download here. An overview of the pricing can be found here.
