Our colleagues at Cartoon Brew have watched the industry and the criteria for the Oscar with eagle eyes all year and compiled the qualified films here –

Perhaps you have already wondered how to qualify for an Oscar in the “Animated Short Film” category? The Animated Film Industry answered this question here, and we have briefly summarised it in German:

  • The film won a qualifying film festival. You can find out which ones these are here.
  • At least one motion-picture cinema in Los Angeles County showed the film for at least seven consecutive days, the production was profitable for the cinema, and cinemas listed it in their programme with the corresponding date and time.
  • The film won a gold, silver or bronze medal at the Academy’s 2017 Student Academy Awards in the “Animation”, “Narrative”, “Alternative” or “Foreign Production” category.

If the film meets at least one of these criteria, members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences view it. This year, for example, there are more than 60 productions. For the 2018 Oscar, we are currently at this point. By Thanksgiving, which is November 23 this year, the jury will select ten films before later agreeing on the five final Oscar nominees.

So here are the candidates for an Oscar in the “Animated Short Film” category. They include productions that were also nominated for the animago AWARD 2017. These are “Darrel”, “In a Heartbeat” and “Ein Krötenlied”, as well as a previous year’s winner, “Garten Party”.
